0-3 Month Essentials

As this coming Wednesday approaches, I just can't believe my little boy will be 12 weeks old! He won't be quite 3 months yet but,WOW time completely just flew by...lack of sleep will do that I'm sure...It's been quite a learning experience...I know every child is different but I wanted to compile a list of things for anyone that may be wanting some ideas for what you may need the first 3 months.

0-3 month must haves

Fisher-Price My Little Snugabunny Deluxe Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper... / Aden Anais Bamboo Muslin Swaddle Blankets (3 Pack) / Burp Cloth Set Just One You / Infantino Safari Fun Twist and Fold Activity Gym and Play Mat / Tumbler With Straw / Miracle Blanket® in Green/Natural - buybuyBaby.com / Medela® Contact™ Nipple Shield - buybuyBaby.com / MAM Animals 0-6M 2-Pack Pacifiers in Blue/Green - buybuyBaby.com

1-Miracle Blanket-talked about this before but it has literally saved our lives! haha...no, but really...its like a straight jacket for babies and our little guy has a crazy startle reflex, so this has helped him not wake himself up every night.

2-Nipple Shields- I almost always have to use these when nursing my son...it makes it easier for him to latch on and stay latched.

3. Baby K'Tan- I use this to go to the store, church, post office..wherever....a lot easier than taking a stroller into places...plus it can be worn several different ways.

4. MAM pacifiers- my little guy doesn't LOVE pacifiers..but he has started taking this...and only these...they seem to be lighter weight and easier for him to hold onto.

5- Burp Cloths- LOTS AND LOTS of burp cloths!!!! Baby boy has a bit of reflux so i always have one of these handy.

6- Cup with a Straw- You get so parched while nursing, I keep one of these babies handy at all times.

7- Rock and Play Sleeper- Creates a little cozy spot for sleeping...and its the only place my baby will usually sleep on his own..the incline of it helps with reflux!

8-Boppy- I use this all the time...everytime I nurse and as a recliner for my baby.

9- Play mAt- He just recently started swatting and grabbing of rate toys but we have done tummy time from the time we got home from the hospital.

10- Munchkin Sound Machine- Has several sounds (we like the white noise)...a nightlight and a ceiling projector that you can change the pictures...its pretty nifty.

11.Muslin Blankets- I use these for everything...nursing cover up, swaddle, burp cloths, blanket, cover when we are going into places in the baby k'tan....i have a lot of these and use them everyday.

I'm starting to use other items regularly as well but I will post about those in a later post. Are there any items that your baby HAD TO HAVE the first 3 months? or to help me out..from 3-6 months?

Bar Cart Essentials

Being a stay at home mommy, I don't go "out-out" a whole lot. So why not bring the party to my home, right? I have been inspired to show you what the ULTIMATE bar cart should include and how to make your own home feel like a swanky place to be. Of course, when I think of being swanky, I think of James Bond... so obviously, this bar cart is mid-century inspired.

I love the idea of all this vintage gold happening. I couldn't be missing all the essential glasses- tumblers, martini glasses, wine glasses and of course a copper mug for one of my fav's, a moscow mule.

The vintage accessories are to die for. The classic gold ice bucket, bottle openers and tools. I added in a few fun napkins, umbrellas and arrow swizzle sticks to give it a pop of fun.

Definitely check out the website, Chairish. An exclusive, curator approved, online marketplace for vintage and used furniture. They have an amazing collection of Bar Carts & essentials for anyone wanting to stock their very own.

Date Night In with Nestlé® Crunch® Party Mix + $20 Giveaway

Since we had our son a little over a month ago, we have been staying at home a lot. Obviously taking a newborn anywhere is not easy. Going to Target is a huge deal to me now..and definitely forget going on date nights at this point...so I had an idea..start having special date nights at home at least once a month...pick activities to do, movies to watch and recipes to try...make it special...not just your average night in.

For this date night, I thought we could watch a movie we both had never seen, "Furious 7", make a special dinner and a new treat that I would invent.

We decided on steaks and smashed potatoes but here's the really special part of the evening..

The perfect addition to a movie night...

Nestlé® Crunch® Party Mix...so easy and totally amazing...I've made caramel corn before but the addition of the Buncha Crunch® put it over the top and took it to the next level.

Setting aside the time and effort to make a special evening for my husband and I was really fun and got us out of having just another boring night. I'll definitely keep doing this monthly and switch it up. This party mix however may need to become a staple at each date night! #lifehacktoboredom

My husband couldn't resist diving in for a handful before I finished my photo session.

Being a New Mommy & Miracle Blanket Giveaway

We had our baby boy...yay! He was born August 5th (his due date) and weighed over 9lbs! Crazy! I definitely never thought a 9 lb. baby could look so tiny! He is amazing and beautiful and we are completely obsessed.

He's just over a month old now. It's been quite the learning curve and things change everyday...literally every single day. Of course, the major thing every new parent deals with is sleep deprivation. It's funny, you hear.."sleep now because when the baby comes you won't get to"...and I always thought.."sure..yea..I get it"...I so didn't understand until now.

I went several nights the first 2 weeks of his life sitting up in a chair not sleeping at all..zero. I was terrified to put him down because he would just scream and cry. He wouldn't sleep in any sort of bassinet, crib, swing or even the rock and play. I would sit up all night researching ways to get a newborn to sleep...being criticized by people in Facebook groups telling me.."newborns just want to be held.".. "Why don't you want to hold your baby?"...of course I wanted to hold my baby..but after 19 hours of labor and 4 hours of pushing...I was still completely exhausted...add in days upon days of not sleeping, you get a zombie mom with raging hormones that cries her face off at the drop of a hat.

After a few days, I found that he would only sleep when he was on my chest...not good..not safe and yes I did this for a few hours on several occasions...I was desperate...I had to find a solution...

I ordered swaddle after swaddle...some worked kind of..but it wasn't until coming across a blog post of the top swaddlers that I had discovered the magic of "The Miracle Blanket". The burrito type wrap would be my saving grace.

A little about The Miracle Blanket
(From miracleware.com)
  • Stops colic
  • Helps baby sleep better and longer
  • Helps keep babies on their backs
  • Prevents twitching and “starting”
  • Prevents facial scratches
  • Easy to wrap and stays put
  • Made of 100% super-soft breathable cotton knit – perfect for any climate
  • 1 size fits all, up to 14 weeks
  • Offers simplicity of design – no buttons, straps, Velcro, knots, or zippers
This swaddle blanket is the only reason I've gotten ANY sleep the past month. Granted, my little boy wakes up every 2-3 hours at night...but that newborn "startle" reflex doesn't wake him when he is wrapped in the miracle blanket. He is cozy and secure with a similar feeling of being tight in my tummy.

After writing the wonderful people at Miracle Ware singing my praises, they have graciously sent me a miracle blanket to give to one of my blog readers. If you have a new baby or know someone that does, this is the ultimate swaddle. If you are expecting a baby, put this on your gift registry...they carry it at many stores, including, Buy Buy Baby. (The Miracle Blanket is designed for baby's up to 14 lbs.) If you would like to see how this amazing invention works, head over to The Miracle Blanket Instructions Page for more info.

Chocolate Raspberry Triple Layer Cake

Its the 4th of July! Yay! My husbands birthday is in just a few days so since I had the day off I decided to make him a fancy cake. I love to make cakes but don't spend much time doing it anymore so I was really excited to make this. I combined 3 different recipes that I found and made my own adjustments. It turned out so great..which is good because 9 times out of 10 my projects or recipes don't turn out the way I want. Here's my recipe for Chocolate Raspberry Triple Layer Cake.

  • 2 boxes of chocolate cake mix
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • dash of salt
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

(you could half the cake ingredients for a single layer sheet cake or 12 cupcakes.)

Chocolate Raspberry Frosting-
  • 1 pound semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 and 1/3 cups sour cream
  • 6 tablespoons seedless raspberry jam
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • Garnish: fresh raspberries
Chocolate Raspberry Ganache-
  • 15 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped *
  • 1 2/3 cups frozen raspberries
  • 8 oz (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
Additional Ingredients-
  • Raspberry Preserves or more of the Raspberry Jam.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

 For the cake-
  • Preheat your oven to 300 degrees and grease your baking pans.
  • Whisk together the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.
  • In your mixer bowl place the wet ingredients.
  • Add in half of the dry ingredients into the mixing bowl and mix together.
  • Then add the rest of the dry ingredients and blend them in.
  • Mix for 2 minutes on medium speed in your mixer.
  • Pour the batter half way in the prepared pans/pan
  • Bake at 300 degrees for about 20-25 minutes (depending on size of cake) then turn oven up to 325 degrees for about an additional 20-25 minutes.

For the frosting-
  • In a heatproof bowl set over simmering water, melt the chocolate chips; stir until smooth.  Let cool to room temperature.
  • Once cooled to room temperature, add the sour cream, raspberry jam,  corn syrup, and vanilla, and beat (using your stand mixer or a hand mixer) until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  • Add the butter to the mixture and beat until thoroughly combined.  Set aside until ready to use.

For the ganache-
  • Bring an inch or two of water to a simmer in a medium saucepan. As the water heats, microwave the raspberries for 1 minute, stirring and mashing with a fork, until they become a smooth liquid. Pour through a strainer (should make 1/3 cup raspberry juice) and set aside to cool.
  • Place the chopped chocolate and the butter in a large heatproof bowl and set over the saucepan. The bowl should not touch the water or fall more than halfway into the saucepan. Stir until the chocolate and butter melt, then gradually add in the slightly warm raspberry juice, whisking to combine.
  • Take the ganache off the heat and let cool until spreadable, stirring once in a while.
Putting the cake together-

  • Start with your first piece of cake. Add a layer of the Raspberry Preserves/Jam (warm this for a few seconds in the microwave to make it more spreadable.)
  • Add a layer of the chocolate ganache.
  • Stack another piece of cake. Do the same layers again.
  • When you get to the top, spread frosting all over the cake.
  • Top with additional toppings, fresh raspberries, chocolate chips, etc.

third trimester must haves

third trimester must haves by sequinsandscissors featuring a food container

1. Pedicure-Since I can't bend over for long periods of time..if AT ALL...I have been actually getting pedicures from another person...You would think since I work at a salon/spa I would be getting these all the time anyway..but nope...never had one until I was very very pregnant..but its so nice to kind of treat myself a bit.

2. Kleenex- I have been emotional lately..not always boo-hoo..cry, cry..sometimes I'm straight up pissssssed..but I definitely feel like kleenex have been my friend lately.....(I should have included toilet paper on here in addition to the kleenex...haha...I mean I do pee A LOT!!!)

3. Pillows- I have a really nice pregnancy pillow..but I can't stand it...so I opt for a regular pillow between my knees all night long.

4. Tupperware- I have been starting making freezer meals for my maternity leave and definitely need these as well as ziploc bags!

5. Notepad- I actually just use the note app on my phone but I make lists for everything..especially right now!

6. Hospital Bag- I had a very cute Turquoise & Pink monogrammed bag made for the hospital and am so excited to use it...I have a list of stuff and have started filling my bag up as much as I can before the big day comes!

7. La Croix- My absolute favorite drink..UNTIL I got pregnant..I couldn't handle even being around it..third trimester rolls around..I'm back to to drinking it...my fav flavor-Lime!

8. Nightgown- I actually have this exact nightgown from Target and am OBSESSED with it..its so light and comfy and prevents me from overheating at night, which is definitely easy to do.

9. Chocolate Chip Cookies- Can't handle how much I LOVE these...they have some wonderful Vegan ones at Earth Fare in case you are interested... #cookieconnoisseur

There you have it..some of my must-haves...and guess what? My little boy's nursery is done as of tonight! So I will be FINALLY posting photos of everything I have been working on for months and months. YAY!

Second Trimester Must Haves

Second trimester must haves

As the start of my third trimester is approaching next week, I thought I would share my second trimester must haves.

1. Jessica Simpson Maternity Skinny Jeans by Motherhood Maternity- these jeans have been a lifesaver for me. They can be dressed up or down and I really like the maternity waist that doesn't get stretched out after a couple of wears.

2. Ban.Do Cup & Straw- I love their cute prints and since I drink water like it's going out of style, these cups make it more fun.

3. Peanut Butter- I've been eating a lot of it..end of story. Hahaha

4. Good supportive shoes- In my line of work I am on my feet literally all day long, having good shoes can make my day good as opposed to a living nightmare of back pain and limping. I literally limped into the Clark's store almost in tears before buying some good supportive shoes. These are a MUST!

5. Heating pad- While yes, it is getting hot outside...when my back has been hurting, especially in the evenings a heating pad seems to really help my achiness.

6. Planner- I have soooo many dr.'s appointments scheduled ( and 2 showers too) I depend on my Erin Condren Life Planner to keep me on track at all times.

7. Slushies- the babies body heat added to mine make me hot 99.9% of the time....slushies have become my jam. Especially blue ones!

8. Rosehip Seed Oil- great for stretching skin and stretch marks!!!!

9. Maternity Pajama Pants- these are fabulous..but palazzo pants work too!

So, here I go into my third trimester....and into the home stretch. Yay!
